Every traveller worth his or her backpack has Dharamshala on their list of been-there-done-that places. Therefore, when a place offers dolce far niente, you are tempted to push the boundaries of your own capacity for “pleasant relaxation in carefree idleness”. Atman, a boutique property by the Leisure Group of Hotels in Dharamshala, offers several opportunities and spots to simply watch time go by. There are more than just cosy nooks at your disposal within the luxuriously appointed resort, whether it is facing a valley full of rhododendrons and green meadows or the mighty expanse of the majestic Dhauladhar ranges.

Located on the Khanyara road, Atman is a 20-minute drive from the Dharamshala bus stand (man filling station) and a half-an-hour drive from the airport. Calming views can be found not only outside of Atman. Even within Atman, which is designed using traditional Himachali kath-kuni architectural style, the interiors and décor are tastefully done. Layered with intricate wooden logs and stone masonry, the traditional technique is designed not just with materials in mind, but also with the environment and cultural landscape.

Sustainable materials, traditional handicrafts, and locally sourced wood are beautifully amalgamated with modern amenities and luxuries. Atman is spread across nearly five acres and has 18 rooms divided into four categories of accommodation: Deluxe Rooms, Superior Rooms, Suites, and Premium Suites. In-room amenities and convenience have been designed with guests’ needs in mind. Pleasing colour tones and Himachali cultural elements – woodwork or the objets d’art that adorn the interiors – make each room exude luxurious warmth.

From the wall art to the brightly coloured sofas and couches, the rooms have a modern feel while remaining true to the local heritage and traditions. The magnificent views of the Kangra valley from each room, however, will take your breath away.

All rooms are spacious, naturally lit with floor-to-ceiling windows with blackout drapes and overlooking lawns. The best part is that most rooms have balconies or sit-out areas where you can get away from the feeling of being cooped in. Personally, I enjoyed the quaint library on the second floor, where one could escape into another world. The recreational room also has a pool table and other indoor games, as well as a variety of other modern amenities.

Exploring Around
If you wish to explore the city, you can ride the recently opened Dharamshala Ropeway, which cuts the 40-minute travel into Dharamshala to only 15 minutes while letting you enjoy the beautiful surroundings. For those who want to experience the fame of Dharamshala as a tourist destination, Atman is just 7 km from the famous Gyuto Monastery, 5 km from the HPCA Cricket Stadium, and 7 km from the Naguni Waterfalls.

For those looking for offbeat experiences, you can take your pick from tea trails, bird watching, archaeological trips, paragliding or pilgrimage tours to the temples nearby.
