• 1498 – Columbus departs with six ships for 3rd trip to America.
• 1527 – University of Marburg (Germany) founded.
• 1539 – Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovers Florida.
• 1646 – Spain & Netherlands sign temporary cease-fire.
• 1913 – New country of Albania, forms.
• 1922 – The Lincoln Memorial built to honour Abraham Lincoln the 16th president of the United States, is dedicated by Former President William Howard Taft in Washington, D.C.
• 1923 – Howard Hanson’s 1st Symphony “Nordic” premieres.
• 1942 – US aircraft carrier Yorktown leaves Pearl Harbor.
• 1959 – Iraq terminates milt assistance pact with the US due to neutrality.
• 1974 – The Airbus A300 passenger aircraft first enters service.
• 2011 – Executing its final mission, Space Shuttle Endeavor successfully undocks from the International Space Station to return to earth.
• 2012 – Former Liberian president, Charles Taylor, is sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in atrocities committed during the Sierra Leone Civil War.
• 2013 – Nigeria passes a law banning same-sex marriage.
• 2013 – Scientists revealed new studies suggesting the turtles evolved in a shell 40 million years prior than what was previously thought.
